First Lady Helena Kerner was married to Governor Otto Kerner. Mrs. Kerner's daughter, Mary, from her previous marriage, passed away and the First Lady and Governor adopted Mary's two children. Mrs. Kerner held a reception each year in the mansion for Illinois Braille and Sight Saving School of Jacksonville residents.
