Born in Portland, Oregon, Elisabeth Haseltine Hibbard was a Chicago artist known for her animal sculptures. Hibbard attended the University of Chicago, earning a PhD degree in 1917. She attended and taught at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1921 and 1925 and did further study at the Ecole D'Art Animalier in Paris. Haseltine and her husband, Frederick C. Hibbard, worked together on several public commissions.  From 1943 to 1950, she was an assistant professor in the Art Department of the University of Chicago.

Baby Pegasus shows her keen observation of animal anatomy and her wry humor. Pegasus is the winged horse of Greek mythology who is depicted as a white steed with huge, outstretched wings. Haseltine imagines Pegasus as a young colt with tiny wings, which he gently nudges with his muzzle.
