Jeanine Coupe Ryding, born 1948, is an artist living in Evanston, IL. Ryding studied sculpture and printmaking in Berlin and at the University of Iowa. She taught in the Print Media Department of the School of the Art Institute for 30 years. Her work includes oversized printmaking, collage, artists' books, and painting.

Ryding is best known for her richly layered monumental woodcuts like this print, Point of Flame. This composition creates a dynamic tension between the object and background, stillness, and movement. Ryding makes her images by gouging or cutting lines and patterns out of her plywood printing surface.  This wide-ranging vocabulary of calligraphic and energetic lines and shapes define her compositions. She writes, “The marks on the inside of the shapes … make the shapes come alive with motion and depth. The lines, dashes and spirals create … the illusion of the third dimension.”
